  1. RECREATIONAL MINING --

  3. is allowed on some public lands and not on others. To
  4. be safe, check land status (who owns it, and whether
  5. it is open to recreational mining) with the U S Bureau
  6. of Land Management and the Alaska Department of Natural
  7. Resources.  As a recreational miner, you do not have
  8. the right to prevent others from looking for gold on
  9. public land. You also do not have a right to pan on
  10. another's claim unless given permission by the claim-
  11. ant.  Before you do any recreational mining, consider
  12. the impacts of this activity on the land. Mining can
  13. affect plants, animals, humans, and soil. The impact
  14. on water is the most serious of all, as silt (washed
  15. into streams and rivers during the process of separa-
  16. ting soil and minerals) threatens the lives of fish.
  17. Before using a dredge, or any other earth-moving or
  18. earth-rearranging equipment, contact the Alaska Depart-
  19. ment of Fish and Game's Habitat Division; a permit may
  20. be necessary.  On all public lands, check with the
  21. managing agency for special restrictions. Good luck!
